Objectives of course
In this course, the student will study security approaches,
vulnerability, attacks as well as prevention mechanisms in wireless
networks. The student will also implement a number of security tools which
will collect information from a wireless network and evaluate its security
level.
Approaches to be used
- Study mechanisms for WEP cryptography, its vulnerability and attacks
- Setup a testbed, implement the attack toward WEP cryptography and
evaluate the security level of this approach
- Study mechanism of WPA-PSK cryptography, its vulnerability and
attack
- Setup another testbed, implement the attack toward WPA-PSK
cryptography and evaluate the security level of this approach
- Develop new evaluation tools for wireless LANs. This tool will be
used to check the security mechanisms implemented in the system, generate
attacks and measure the strength of a key distribution mechanisms, and
finally generate a report for the network administrator that includes the
network security level as well as suggestions as of how to prevent security
attacks.
Accomplishments expected
- Understand features of WEP cryptography, its vulnerability and
attack.
- Be able to launch the attack toward WEP cryptography and evaluate
the security level, such as the possibility to be attack or the complication
of share keys.
- Understand mechanism, vulnerability and attack of WPA-PSK
cryptography in wireless LANs.
- Be able to implement the attack toward WPA-PSK cryptography and
evaluate the security level.
- Create the evaluation tool for wireless LANs
Deliverables of the course
- Interim reports submitted every two weeks
- Final report and software demo during the final week
